Early Life and Disappearance
Born on April 7, 1976, Christy was a vibrant child with brown hair and hazel eyes. She had a slight speech impediment, was hearing-impaired, and had distinguishing features such as a strawberry birthmark on the right side of her back near her hip, a scar on her right arm, and crooked teeth. On the day she vanished, she was last seen wearing a turquoise bodysuit and was barefoot.California Attorney General+4Charley Project+4Cold Case Resource Center+4Find A Grave+4NCMEC+4NCMEC+4
On that fateful day, Christy left her home in the 200 block of Broward Avenue around 2:30 p.m. to purchase cat food for her pets, Boo Boo and Skeeter, from the nearby Greenacres Grocery (now Belk's General Store) located just a few hundred feet away. A store clerk recalled selling her the cat food between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Afterward, Christy was seen outside the store talking to two other girls, watching children play with fireworks. She never returned home.Wikipedia+6Cold Case Resource Center+6AMWFans+6Charley Project
Investigation and Search Efforts
When Christy failed to return home, her sister noticed her absence around 8:30 p.m. and alerted their mother. A massive search ensued, involving over 200 volunteers, police officers on horseback, and tracking dogs. Despite these efforts, no trace of Christy was found. Her turquoise bodysuit was later discovered in a swampy wooded area near her home, but this clue did not lead to further breakthroughs.Cold Case Resource CenterCharley Project+1NCMEC+1
Suspects and Leads
The Rambo Brothers
Willis and Charles "Chuck" Rambo, who lived near Christy's home, became persons of interest. Christy had visited their house several times, and a witness had seen Charles give her money. After her disappearance, the brothers were charged with molesting Christy's six-year-old best friend. They pleaded guilty to lewd assault and received ten years' probation. Despite thorough searches of their property, no evidence linked them to Christy's disappearance.NCMEC+6Charley Project+6Cold Case Resource Center+6Wikipedia+3AMWFans+3Charley Project+3
Victor George Wonyetye Jr.
Another suspect was Victor Wonyetye, a man with a criminal history dating back to the 1960s, including convictions for sexual assaults. He lived near Christy's residence and was reportedly seen outside the grocery store on the day she disappeared. Wonyetye moved to New Hampshire shortly after Christy's disappearance and became a suspect in the 1984 disappearance of Tammy Lyn Belanger in that state. Although prison inmates testified that he admitted to killing both Christy and Tammy, he was never charged in connection with either case. He was sentenced to 75 years for burglary and indecent exposure in Florida in 1992 and died in 2012, eight months after his release from prison.
Other Persons of Interest
In 2010, authorities named Delbert Mosher as another possible suspect. He lived in the area at the time of Christy's disappearance and had been arrested three times for child molestation. He died in a Tennessee prison over twenty years after Christy went missing.Charley Project
William Ferris, who lived near the home of one of Christy's friends, was also questioned. Initially denying knowing Christy, he later admitted familiarity, as his wife sometimes babysat for Christy's friend. According to his wife, Ferris once ominously stated that one of the girls would disappear someday. After Christy went missing, he allegedly said she would never be found. However, no evidence has implicated him in the case.Charley Project
Community and Family Impact
Christy's disappearance deeply affected her family and the Greenacres community. Her mother, Jennie Johnson, moved away after the incident but later returned to live in the same house, holding onto hope for answers. The case garnered national attention, with organizations like the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Adam Walsh Resource Center assisting in the search and awareness efforts.California Attorney General+7NCMEC+7Find A Grave+7Cold Case Resource Center
